Just Day Dreaming
And my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:19
The other day I found myself day dreaming about what I would do if I won or inherited a million dollars from a long lost relative! In my mind, I began to make a list of how I would use the money.
First, I would pay my tithes. Then, my husband and I would get completely out of debt. Next, I would pay off all of our children’s debt, make sure our parents were taken care of, and then give and bless people like crazy!
You see, before my mind went down this rabbit trail of daydreaming, I had been praying for provision for our children and grandchildren. I don’t know how my mind ventured off from praying! But, it did.
Those of you that are parents understand and will agree that no matter the age of our children, we never stop being concerned for their wellbeing, their provisions and needs in life. I had a great list going of how much better our lives and our children’s lives would be if we were blessed with a huge sum of money. My list wasn’t even about having lots of bigger and better things. My list comprised of just wanting to see that everyday living was a little easier and less stressful for them.
Wouldn’t you know it that no sooner had this thought crossed my mind than the Holy Spirit brought the above passage to my memory. Oh, He didn’t stop there. In my heart, I felt like He said, “Whether I bless you with a huge sum of money or not, I will meet all of your needs.”
Yes, I quickly repented and asked for forgiveness for not trusting Him. While my daydreaming was just that – imagining an easier life, it did reveal the underlying truth that once again, I was trying to handle, control and solve life’s troubles.
Paul was coming to a close in his letter to the Philippians. He knew first hand of God’s provisions. Paul had journeyed to many places sharing the gospel message of Jesus never expecting to receive an honorarium. He didn’t demand special treatment or require an offering. Paul just went, fully trusting that God would supply what he needed. And, God did. Paul could say with confidence that God would provide because he had experienced it over and over again.
In Matthew 6, Jesus talks to us about worrying over the needs we would have in this life. He knew that down through the ages people would struggle with how we will pay the bills, buy groceries, clothe our kids, provide a place to live, pay for an education, and on and on it goes. And, of course, Jesus was right.
I have come to one conclusion: we either trust Jesus, take Him at His word; or, we don’t. Yes, it is true that we might think life would be easier if we had a million dollars. But, what stories, what adventures would we have to tell our children and grandchildren of how God came through for us at just the right time?
So today, I am choosing to trust God. Will you?
